In April 2018, the City Commission of Weslaco appointed Dr. Joel Rivera, as Chief of Police. Chief Rivera began his Law Enforcement career in 1998 and has served in various capacities at the Hidalgo County Constable Precinct 1, Hidalgo County Constable Precinct 4, and most recently as a division chief at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s office.

During his law enforcement career, Chief Rivera earned a bachelor's of science- police administration (2000) and a Master’s degree in public administration (2011) from the University of Texas-Pan American.  Chief Joel Rivera holds a Ph.D. from Northcentral University, Homeland Security and Leadership. He serves as a coach for several universities, in the Public Administration Accelerated program, including higher education as a program chair with South Texas College-Public Safety Program. His professional experience includes over 20 years in law enforcement in which he served in various capacities.
